Racing Parts FAQs

What country started auto racing?

The French did. They hosted the first race (a single entry affair) the first time trial (which doubled as the first competitive race) and the first single-start race. They created the dedicated racing arena (in Nice, France). They still are a major player in European racing leagues, and even have drivers in popular American leagues as well.

What styles of racing are there today?

The style that most closely mimics the first auto races is rally racing. The first races were held before any country had a nationalized road system, so the cars had to be able to handle all sorts  of conditions. They were durability tests as much as time trials. Rally racing features a series of stages, each stage being set to present a different set of circumstances, from ice, to dirt and bark, to gravel, to roads. Between each stage is an untimed leg of the race in which a car must be driven from one event to the next. The fact that it must be driven is a key factor in rally races.

Ok, that’s one kind of race, but what else do they have?

Well, formula racing is an open wheeled style of racing that features cars with low profiles, tight cockpits, and huge tails. The courses are usually comprised of a bewildering series of curves that test not only a driver’s speed, but their control. Stock car races feature cars that are virtually identical to each other, testing a driver’s skill more than the team’s ability to put together a championship car. And then there are motocross races, which are off road and feature things like dirt bikes, dune buggies, and pickup and SUV classes.
