Race Gear
Race gear is a term that extends to the miscellaneous items that accompany the racing industry. It could refer to the hats each racing team puts out for fans to purchase. It could also refer to any number of other things, from the checkered flags fans can purchase at the raceway to the fuzzy dice that a driver hangs from the rear view mirror.
Race gear is also a reference to things that aren’t easily identifiable as equipment or parts. Of course, in a more literal sense it could refer to the transmission, which is itself a set of gears for race cars. However, while using that sense of the term could be considered witty, it could hardly be seen as useful. After all, if a man wants to talk about any specific gear in a race car he is better served speaking in terms of 1st 2nd, 3rd gears and the like than by spouting a random term that might possibly be made to fit into the context of what he is trying to say.
As far as actual race gear is concerned, it is primarily knick knack variety items that are properly named by the term. Foam hands, t-shirts, bumper stickers, hats and the like all exemplify what it means to be race gear. It is to be commercial without necessarily serving a higher purpose than commercialism. Thus the gear may or may not have a purpose other than to be purchased.
